Phoenix is one of the largest cities in the United States. Full of sprawl and suburbs, Phoenix is truly a vast territory; driving from one corner of the greater Phoenix area to another takes more than an hour. Anchored in the desert, the summers are hot and dry and the midday hours are often too warm for much outdoors activities. Evenings and early mornings though, as well as the fall, winter and spring months, provide perfect weather to support a medley of outdoor shopping malls in Phoenix.
The outdoor mall is nearly a Phoenix creation and the Arizona Center is its premier installment. Like most downtown areas, the Arizona Center is Phoenix's cosmopolitan gathering area and is the place where community happens. You can enjoy walking along the streets and paths; large complex gardens are pruned year round, giving the area a beautiful warmth and colorful ambiance. Specialty shops line the streets and walkways, and dining is a staple. There are dozens of local restaurants featuring Mexican food, Greek, Chinese, Italian, American and blended cuisine.
If you are staying in the Phoenix area by the Arizona Center you will have plenty of hotels to choose from. The Hyatt, Sheraton, and Spring Hill Suites are all less than a half-mile from the mall. Their rates vary from $95-$150/night. The Wyndham, Super 8 and Inn Link offer rooms under$50/night and are all within a mile of the mall as well.
Phoenix's biggest boutique mall, Biltmore Fashion Park, is another outdoor offering. The entire property is decked out with gardens and classy shops. Macy's and Saks are the anchor stores, and William-Sonoma is a good sampling of the type of stores that round out the area. Nearby hotels include the upscale Ritz-Carlton, and Waldorf Astoria. Both hotels offer top-notch amenities geared, not necessarily toward affordability, but great customer service and experiences.
Not all shopping in Phoenix is arranged in outdoor malls, but a good majority of successful malls are. The Arizona Mills Mall, Arrowhead Town Center, Desert Ridge and Fifth Avenue are all outdoor venues. Each mall is specially designed for its atmosphere. Some are designed to portray class; other are made for economy. Regardless, in the dry warmth of this Arizona metropolis, being outside is highly preferred.
