Phoenix Tourist Attractions From a Local’s Standpoint |
Phoenix, from a visual perspective, starts out unique. The fifth most populous city in the United States is immediately identifiable in pictures from the large Saguaro Cacti that stand throughout the Sonoran desert of Phoenix. These cacti alone are enough to draw tourism to the city, but Phoenix has much more to offer than dry sunny skies and tree-size cacti. The best Phoenix tourist attractions however, can be difficult for people to locate if they do not know how to focus their search.
Tourism—good tourism—is the search for parts of culture that are unique to the place a traveler has gone. Yet, for the sake of a buck, many businesses are set up solely to make money by offering “must see” attractions of their locale. Some attractions are important to see and really do encompass a part of a community. In Phoenix, Spring Training Baseball, from late February through the month of March, is a good example of a tourist attraction that does not stand for the city but rather shows a piece of its culture. Spring training is a singularly good reason to travel to Arizona.
Yet, while watching baseball, or at any other time of the year, who better than the locals can offer a view of what makes living in Phoenix special and enjoyable? If travelers are not inclined to visit the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in nearby Tucson, an equally enjoyable outing would be to stroll in downtown Phoenix and enjoy a local-approved breakfast at 12 East Café, touted for having the best corned beef hash in the state. Instead of elbowing their fellow out-of-towners at the standard kitschy spots, savvy tourists make a point of ‘breathing the air that the locals do’. While at 12 East Café then, adventurous visitors should ask their server what he or she would be doing if not for work. Their tips often guide people to the unseen and wonderful hominess that most tourists will never see.
