Southwest cuisine is nothing short of spectacular, but sometimes you might get a hankering for something with roots on the far side of the ocean, Atlantic or Pacific.
Based on diner reviews, here is a list of six unique restaurants in Phoenix, serving ethnic foods from Bosnia, Persia, India, Germany, and more. Most are very reasonably priced, too.
Caffe Sarajevo 3411 Northern Avenue
Small in size but big in European flavor, this cozy, family-run restaurant offers the best in Bosnian and Serbian cuisine, right down to the Turkish coffee. Try the cevapi, a Bosnian sausage sandwich, easily the most popular dish on the menu.
Baiz Market 523 North 20th Street
This combination restaurant, grocery and deli specializes in foods from the Mediterranean, Persia, Africa, India and Pakistan. The chicken or beef shawarma and the baklava are favorites.
Olive Tree Mediterranean Market and Grill 1930 West Pinnacle Peak Road
If you’re looking for an authentic, family-style restaurant and market, you’ve come to the right place. The Jordanian owners make most of the specialty foods by hand, like cheeses, olives and baklava. Get the combo plate for a little taste of everything.
Balkan Bakery 1618 East Bell Road
In the mood for some good, hearty artisan bread, a savory pastry for lunch, or decadent sweet for dessert? Balkan bakes everything fresh daily, and will more than fill you up for a reasonable price. A few tables are available, but most customers carry out.
German Sausage Company 4900 East Indian School Road
Walk in the door and just take a moment to inhale. In one breath you’ll be transported to Europe! This carnivore’s delight is the place for authentic cured meats, fresh-baked pretzels, and the massive “Das Boot,” a giant beer served in a boot-shaped mug. Cash or checks only – and hurry, it closes early.
New India Bazaar 2544 North Seventh Street
Enter through the back door, or through the grocery store in front for an amazing and affordable buffet of Indian delights. Don’t bother ordering off the menu, the buffet servings are just as good. Enjoy your flavorful selections to the tasty strains of Bollywood on the flat-screen television.
